John Walsh, born 1812, in Armagh, County Armagh, (or area near Dublin), was aged 17, when according to his conviction description, he was a painter by trade, and tried for picking pockets, “kerchiefs”. He had 2 former offences for pickpocketing. At his trial in 1829 in Dublin at the Dublin Assizes, he was transported for 7 years, for larceny. The “Guildford” sailed from Dublin on 12 July 1829, and he was aged 17 and was aged 18 on arrival in Port Jackson, on 4 November 1829, on the 8th voyage of the ship.

Description: 5’ 3 1/2”, brown hair, hazel eyes, a Roman Catholic. On arrival he was assigned to John Stawdon, at Elderslie as a servant and later to Alexander Berry’s estate at Coolangatta, Shoalhaven Heads.

After his Certificate of Freedom was granted in, he met and married Catherine O’Meara in Campbelltown and they moved to the Illawarra where he was allowed to live. (It is quite likely that he met Michael O’Mara, her father, at Berry Estate at Coolangatta, where he was also assigned.) They had twelve children and lived in the Stoney Creek, Shellharbour and Gerringong areas south of Sydney. They were dairy farmers, grew crops and raised horses and cattle. He died at age 58 on Thursday 28 July, 1870. John Walsh is buried at Gerringong Cemetery.
