Convict Notes
Sarah was tried at Maidstone Quarter Sessions, Kent 12 January 1809, on June 7 1809 she was convicted of Fraud and sentenced to seven years penal servitude "Convicted of unlawfully, knowingly and designedly by false pretences obtaining from William Worboys £4-16-0 of the monies of the said Willliam Worboys. Ordered to be transported for the term of seven years to such place or places, port or ports beyond the seas as His Majesty by and with the advice of his privy council shall declare and approve pursuant to the statute in such case made and provided"..... John Ellison was a convict, transported on the Albermarle in 1791. John and Sarah had a large family, 10 children located born between 1811 and 1828. Sainty & Johnson; 1828 Census of New South Wales: [Ref E0395] Ellison, John, 65, free by servitude, Albermarle, 1797, 7 years, Protestant, publican, Parramatta, 50 acres all cleared and cultivated, 7 horses. [Ref E0396] Ellison, Sarah, 29 [sic], free by servitude, Canada, 1810 7 years, Protestant. [Ref E0397] Ellison, William 17 born in the colony. [Ref E0398] Ellison, Henry 15 born in the colony. [Ref E0399] Ellison, Thomas 13 born in the colony. [Ref E0400] Ellison, Sarah 11 born in the colony. [Ref E0401] Ellison, John 9 born in the colony. [Ref E0402] Ellison, James 6 born in the colony. [Ref E0406] Ellison, George 1 month born in the colony. # NOTE The census information about Sarah is inaccurate. She was actually aged about 40.
In the colony, Sarah married John Ellison. John Ellinson, free, of the parish of Parramatta and Sarah Watkin were married in this church by banns this seventh day of October 1817 by me Samuel Marsden. John and Sarah both made their X marks in the register in the presence of John Bishop and Martha Bishop who also made their X marks.
I am unsure as to what crime Sarah committed. In some records she is listed as a free settler, this is not true! She was definitely a convict and listed in the indents etc.
