According to the 1851 census William Watson was born in the parish of St Luke's, Middlesex. In the 1841 census he is with his parents John and Ann Watson (John, a silversmith) and siblings David (an apprentice silversmith) and Ann. William Watson married Catherine McNamara at Northam, Western Australia 16th Sep 1858. The couple farmed at 'Belgrove' in Jennapullin. They had 11 children between 1859 and 1884; 9 children survived and raised families of their own; most were also farmers. William Watson died at his home 'Belgrove' and was buried at Northam Cemetery with wife Catherine (d1896).
