Convict Notes

John was tried at The Old Bailey, 20th September 1809. He was tried for the crime of Embezzlement, aged 39. He was acting as an accountant for a Livery Stable and in fact kept money which had been paid to them. OLB BAILEY ONLINE (t18090920-126). There were actually two John Woods tried that day and another only 5 days before. They were all transported - 2 were transported on Admiral Gambier, which does really complicate research. Especially since neither are recorded in the 1811 NSW Muster. John is clearly identified in the 1828 Census of New South Wales. Wood, John, 58, FS, Admiral Gambier, 1811, 14 years, Protestant, Schoolmaster at Pitt Town [Ref W2351 page 402] Wood, Elizabeth, 32, FS, Mary Ann, 1812, 7 years, protestant, [Ref W2352]. Also identified were three children, Joseph 6, Ann 3 and Elizabeth 16 mths. John had married Elizabeth Sarah Bond (AKA Green) on 9th October 1820. Elizabeth was a convict, transported on Mary Ann in 1812. They had 8 children between 1822 and 1839.
