Convict Notes

Register of General Courts Martial Private John Wright, Coldstream Guards Regt, Tried at Guard Room London. 30 July 1821, for Desertion & losing his Regimental clothing, Transportation as a Felon for 7 years.

I'm confident that John was baptised 19 Nov at Framfield in Sussex to Edward & Elizabeth WRIGHT who were travellers. I descend from his brother James. One of John's conviction records says his native place was Sussex. Ages in sources make him 24 in 1821, therefore born about 1797 - there is only one candidate about that time in Sussex records to be him and that's Edward & Elizabeth's son. Father Edward's legal settlement was at Hailsham in Sussex. If I'm right, John married Ann AKEHURST at Hellingly Sussex (next to Hailsham) in 1819 and they had a son John in 1819 at Hellingly who may have died in 1821. Wife Ann, as Ann WRIGHT, suffered removal orders from Uckfield to Hailsham in 1827 and again in 1832, being described as the 'wife of John WRIGHT, transported' on both occasions. John was convicted of desertion as well as theft at his trial, so it appears he must have been in the army. There is in fact a military record at FMP which should be him, as follows - https://www.findmypast.com.au/transcript?id=GBM/NAP2/00009239 Napoleonic War Records 1775 - 1817 Regimental & Service Records Name John WRIGHT Enlisted 13 April 1813 at Oporto Place [native?]: Elsenham, Sussex Remarks Re Attested; 2 Attestations R204(26 & 27) Reference R213 Enlisted year 1813 Page 215 Dataset title Napoleonic War Records 1775 - 1817 Category Armed Forces & Conflict Subcategory Regimental & Service Records His native place in the above record, Elsenham, doesn't exist and didn't exist as that name. It has to mean Hailsham. Hailsham as a name gets badly mangled in sources due to the H at the start of the name being dropped (was once known as Aylesham). Other mangled versions of Hailsham in sources include Leisham, Elsham, Hoslem, Haslem, none of which exist or existed under those names either. Two nephews to John were also transported, James to NSW and William to Tasmania. Their father was James, John's brother. Nephew James was tried at Lewes 1829 for housebreaking at Hailsham, sentenced to death commuted to transportation for life, to prison hulk Hardy at Portsmouth where he became ill, convict ship Lady Feversham departed 1830, arrived Sydney 1831. He remained ill all the way to NSW and died a few months after arrival at Sydney. Nephew William was tried at Lewes 3 Jan 1842 for two thefts, sentenced to 14 years transportation, prison hulk York at Gosport, convict ship Moffat (4) departed Aug 1842 to Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) arriving Nov 1842. I have an extensive tree at Ancestry.com which includes the WRIGHT families. My user name there is peterd501, the only one with that user name.
