Convict Notes
NATIVE PLACE: John Abbott was born on 10 February 1816 at Southminster, Essex, and baptised one month later on 10 March. His parents were William and Mary Abbott (see Baptism Register; Service of Church: Registers of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials; Incumbent; Southminster, St. Leonard; Parish Records;1813-1845). CRIME: He was convicted on 8 April 1834 at Chelmsford for stealing a hog. It was his first offence. PRISON: On 16 May 1834 he was sent from Springfield to the hulk Hardy, at Portsmouth, having been convicted for stealing a hog. He was discharged from the hulk on 30 June to be sent to VDL (see UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849; Hardy Register 1805-1836). IN VDL: On arrival in VDL, he was single. His Conduct Record (which has just one entry for drunkenness) shows John Abbott received his Ticket of Leave on 25 April 1839. His Free Certificate was granted in 1841 (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-2$init=CON31-1-2p120).
