Joseph Abbott was transported on the Marion, departing 7th Jun 1845 and arriving 16th Sep 1845 with 299 passengers.
Built 1834 at Calcutta. Wood ship of 684 Tons. The 1847/48 voyage sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) BUT also went on to Port Phillip Bay, Victoria where 300 exiles disembarked. (The newspaper source says they were from Millbank, Pentonville & Parkhurst prisons.)

Joseph Abbott was convicted at Preston on 21/02/1845 for stealing a quarter of beef (previous for poaching). 7yr sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Lane (Tasmania) on the 'Marion' arriving Sept 1845. Aged 35yrs; married, 2 or 3 children; 5'5"; fresh complexion, freckled; brown hair; Protestant; can read & write; native place - Blackwell, Lancashire. Mother: Mary; Sister- Susan; Brothers - James, Henry & Thomas - at native place. 12mths Probation - Long Point. Assigned to Mr. Langdon (Langden) at Bothwell, Hamilton district, Tasmania. Died in service of Mr. Langdon 12/12/1846, Hamilton.
