Family connections for William (Abel) are: ABEL William (Abel/le/ell) son of William (Abell) & Ann (Izon) was baptised on 9 8 1776 in Warwickshire. He was tried for stealing clothes w/3others at Warwick Assizes at age14 on 19 3 1791, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 14 2 1791 after a voyage of 8months on PITT; much fever & attempts to escape from the ship resulted in deaths of convicts-of the 450convicts on board only 29 were alive at muster in May 1792 (or perhaps only this many could be mustered). In March 1796 he was sent on SUPPLY to Norfolk Island arriving on 2/18 4 1796. He had a relationship with Mary Ann (Morey) whom he later married. He was Free by servitude by 1802. He was recorded as a settler/landowner in February 1805. He left Norfolk Island with his family as part of the first evacuation (for which volunteers apparantly had been called with appropriate compensation offerred & for which he may have tried to decline as some successful farmers were asked to stay) on 25 9 1807 (or 26 12 1807) on HMS PORPOISE to Derwent Hobart, arriving on 17 1 1808; he was granted 34acres at New Norfolk Derwent Valley on which he established a farm & home known as 'Valley Field'. He married Mary Ann (Morey/Marie) on 21 12 1811 at St Marys (RC?) Gretna New Norfolk, recorded at St Davids CofE Hobart. He is recorded as off stores on 2 10 1818 at Hobart Town. He obtained a publicans Licence about 1821 & operated the Kings Head Inn. On 9 4 1826 he killed his son Henry with a gun-mistaken as an intruder; he sold the Inn soon after in 1827 & moved to Macquarie Plains. She is recorded as off stores on 2 10 1818 at Hobart Town. She died on 27 12 1856 age74/8. He died on 4 12 1804 age at least60 from heavy drinking, father of at least 4children & was buried on Norfolk Island; although he is recorded as leaving Norfolk Island on 25 12 1807. On 16 2 1819 he stole 200sheep of Edward & William (Kimberley), Daniel (Stanfield) & William (Nicholls) of Tin Dish Holes near York Plains; he escaped from gaol; he was 5'5" stout build dark hair dark eyes; after capture he was tried at Sydney (travelling on PRINCE LEOPOLD) & was sentenced to 2years prison. He was granted 100acres in September 1816 which he later sold. He returned to Hobart about November 1822. She was taken by her father to Derwent Tasmania as part of the first evacuation on 25 12 1807 on HMS PORPOISE arriving on 17 1 1808; to New Norfolk/Derwent Valley. She married Augustus (Morris) on 22 2 1813 at St Davids CofE Hobart & produced 5children. She is recorded as off stores on 2 10 1818 at Hobart Town. She died on 16 6 1823 age26-or 16 3 1823 age29. ..Augustus/Don (Morris) was born about 1788. He was tried for stealing clothes of his employer James (Hughes) of Salisbury at Wiltshire Assizes on 31 7 1802, sentenced to 7years, held on a hulk at Portsmouth & arrived at Port Phillip (now Victoria) as a convict on 4 10 1803 after a voyage of 7+months on HMS CALCUTTA (an expedition that settled in Tasmania); he would have camped at what is now Sorrento/Sullivans Bay. This expedition rejected Port Phillip for a settlement at this time & he was moved to Risdon Derwent Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) on 27 1 1804 (arriving on 15 2 1804) on OCEAN or HMS LADY NELSON or leaving on 24 3 1804 (arriving on 25 6 1804) on OCEAN. He was employed guiding timber carriages & attempted escapes from the colony in May 1805, in September & in December. He may have sired children before his marriage in 1813 as he is recorded as off stores with 3children on 2 10 1818 at Hobart Town. In 1820 he had property at Hanging Sugar Loaf near Ross & an Inn punt (Cove Ferry & Inn) & farm at Cove Point/Bridgewater. He was granted 40&50acres in Ulva & Strangford areas & purchased 150acres. He is recorded as off stores with 3children on 2 10 1818 at Hobart Town. In 1816 he was willed his fathers land at New Norfolk. He was taken by his parents as part of the first evacuation on 25 9 1807 (or 26 12 1807) on HMS PORPOISE arriving at Derwent Hobart on 17 1 1808; to land at New Norfolk Derwent Valley. She married Thomas (Abel brother of William) on 16 6 1828. ..Thomas (Abel) was born on 11 2 1804 & baptised on 25 11/12 1805 age22m on Norfolk Island. He was taken by his parents on 26 12 1807 as part of the first evacuation on HMS PORPOISE & arrived at Hobart on 17 1 1808; to land at New Norfolk Derwent Valley. He died on 19 10 1873 age69 & was buried at Queensborough cemetery. ..Details of Thomas (Abel)s family are given just above. 4.Derwent (Hibbins) was born in 1810 in Van Diemens Land & baptised on 6 7 1810 at (St Davids CofE?) Hobart. He was convicted for stealing cattle at Hobart Supreme Court on 14 11 1833, & sentenced to Port Arthur prison for Life. On 18 7 1836 he, still a prisoner, was employed as an overseer at Point Puer convict sation for boys. He was issued his Ticket of Leave in 1841 & Conditional Pardon by 1845. By January 1847 he was a signalman at Mt Augustus/Sandford. He resigned his position to look after his aging mother. 5.Osmond (Hibbins) was born on 25 11 1813 in Van Diemens Land & baptised on 23 2 1819 age5 in Van Diemens Land. He went to the mainland & returned on 24 3 1843 on ABEONA as a working class without assistance. Arrived Sydney: 14th February 1792. Vessel: Pitt. Status: Convict. Father: William Abell. Mother: Ann Izon. Occupation: Married: Mary Ann Morey on the 21st December 1811 at St. Mary's Gretna, Tasmania. Died: Gretna, Tasmania. Buried: 18th November 1850 at St. Mary's, Gretna. Profile: Prior to the Macquarie Era the following children were born to William and Mary Ann:- William born 10th March 1800 at Norfolk Island. Thomas born 14th November 1802 at Norfolk Island died 12th February 1803. Thomas born 11th February 1805 at Norfolk Island. George born pre 1808 at Norfolk Island. Henry born 4th November 1808 at Hobart, Tasmania. During the Macquarie Era the following children were born to William and Mary Ann:- Sarah born 6th October 1814 at Hobart, Tasmania. After the Macquarie Era the following children were born to William and Mary Ann:- Emanual born 12 June 1822 at Hobart, Tasmania. John Bartle Freeman born 5th December 1825. Mary Ann born 30th December 1829. William Abel, with three others, was convicted at Warwick Assizes of stealing wearing apparel from sundry places in the town. Arriving in February 1792, he remained in New South Wales until March 1796 when he left Sydney aboard the SS Supply for Norfolk Island. It was on Norfolk Island that William met Mary Ann Morey. William and Mary left Norfolk Island in December 1807 to arrive in Hobart on the 17th January 1808. William was granted land in the New Norfolk district and built a residence with out buildings known as "Valley-field" in 1822. He was granted a publican's licence for the sale of liquor. The property at that time was known as the "Kings Head Inn". William' s 19 year old son Henry was mistaken for an intruder when he was returning home late at night on the 9th April 1826 and was shot and killed. William sold the inn to George Lowe shortly after.
