Summer Suffolk Assizes, At these Assizes, although there were only 11 prisoners on the Calendar for trial, 8 of them were capitally convicted, and received sentence of death : viz. … and John Ablett, for stealing a horse, the property of Philip Meadows, Great Bealiugs … They were all reprieved. 'John Ablett, charged with having stolen a black poney from the Rev. Mr. Meadows, Bealings, and also two horses from other persons' [The Suffolk Chronicle; or Weekly General Advertiser & County Express. 25 July 1812] In October 1812, he was removed from the County Gaol in Ipswich and received 22 October to the Portland Hulk, Langstone Harbour. [The Suffolk Chronicle; or Weekly General Advertiser & County Express. 31 October 1812, page 4; Ancestry.com UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849] Assigned to Mr Jenkins of Sydney [Sydney Gazette 18 June 1814 reported as absconding from Mr Jenkins] Assigned to William Cox of Windsor [servant to Wm Cox Esq in 1816, 1818, 1820 lists] The book 'First Ten Settlers of Bathurst chosen by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1818' by Lee & Richard Steele 2018 has the following information: 'In March 1818 he was one of the first ten settlers to receive a land grant in Bathurst from Governor Macquarie, being Portion 1' 9 Oct 1820 Return of land and stock belonging to the different settlers at Bathurst: John 'Eblett' 50 acres: 50 cleared, 15 acres wheat, 2 of barley, 1/2 pease & beans, 1/2 potatoes, 2 horses, 27 horned cattle, 35 hogs 30 June 1823 Confirmation of land grants at Kelso: John 'Abbott' 82 acres 'John Ablett sold his land to Thomas Hobby early 1823 for 200 Spanish dollars.
