Lawrence ACKERLEY was convicted at Lancaster, England on 25 Oct 1830 for stealing linen. Gaol report: "bad character". Previously convicted for vagrancy. 7 yr transportation sentence. Hulk Report: "good". Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Argyle' arriving there 5 Aug 1831. Single man; aged 25 yrs; house carpenter; 5'6"; brown complexion; dk brown hair; grey eyes. Native place of birth: Manchester, England. Protestant. Father - a milkman at native place 4 brothers - James, a carpenter; Thomas, a shoemaker; John, a xxx worker at Stockport & Joseph, a shoemaker. Colony of VDL: Assigned to public works 1 Nov 1832: Neglect of duty. Reprimanded. 12 May 1835: Neglect of duty & disobedience. 50 lashes. 25 Aug 1837: Absent without leave. 6 weeks imprisonment. Passholder status granted.
