In 1830 John married Sarah Prudence Bankin. Sarah was the daughter of Richard Bankin (Convict, 1815, “Marquis of Wellington”) and his wife Prudence nèe Perkins.
Sarah had arrived , with her sister, in the colony as a passenger on “Borneo’ 28th December 1828, their mother had died on the voyage.
Sarah and John had 9 children born between 1831 and 1851.
