Court hearing Sept 1843: William and brother John ADAMS charged with burglary, breaking into the house of Joseph Sowerby in St. Marylebone, London. Their defence was that they were left without a home and had little money. John aged 16 yrs and William 17 yrs.




William ADAMS was convicted at the CCC, London on 18 Sept 1843 for burglary. First conviction. Tried with his brother who was left at Parkhurst Prison for young offenders. 10 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Mount Stuart Elphinstone' arriving 17 June 1845. Aged 19yrs; a labourer; single man; Protestant; can read & write; 5'4 1/2" height; fair complexion; brown hair; Hazel eyes; scar on right cheek. Native place: Shoreditch, London. Mother: Elizabeth (ref. Convict Indent) Brothers: John & Bernard " " VDL: 1845 - issued with a Ticket of Leave upon arrival. Hobart district. In hospital for a few days in 1847. Clear Conduct Record. 30 Nov 1847: Conditional Pardon approved. (n.b. There are numerous convicts of the same name in records.)
