UNION HALL. Yesterday, a young man, named Affleck, better known by the name of Alick Drummond, was charged with having attempted to cut a trunk from behind & cabriolet, on Monday night last. Mr. Smith, the contractor for conveying convicts to different places, stated that, on Monday night, as he was driving along Blackfriar’s-road, he felt something tugging at the back part of the chaise ;he pulled up, and saw a man in the act of cutting away a trunk. The robber immediately  made off, but on passing a lamp-post, the light was reflected upon him so strongly that the prosecutor was enabled now to identify him. Mr. Smith had a gun with him, but in consequence of it being behind a gentleman who was with him in the gig, he could not get it up, otherwise he should have fired at the prisoner when he ran off. Information having been given at the watch-house, Berwick the constable, apprehended him on Tuesday night, whilst drinking in the Bricklayer’s Arms. The prisoner, in his defence, said that the prosecutor was mistaken ; that he was accidentally passing by at the time, but was quite ignorant of the circumstance. In consequence of some of the officers having ascertained that the prisoner is the person who some little time ago took a box containing some valuable property out of an errand-cart, near the Elephant and Castle, he was remanded until Saturday, in order that the parties robbed might have time to appear against him.  Public Ledger, 7 Jan 1830.
