AINSWORTH Family connections for Joseph (Ainsworth) are: Joseph (Ainsworth) son of John (Ainsworth) & Mary Ann (Butcher) was born on 18 10 1808 at Pudsey Yorkshire & became a farm labourer. He was tried for highway robbery at Ballericay & stealing a purse of T Farrow at Chelmsford Essex in December 1832, held at Essex Gaol Delivery, sentenced to death commuted to Life & arrived in NSW on 26 8 1833 after a journey of 4months on CAPTAIN COOK. He married Martha (Blackman/Davi/dson her second marriage) on 29 12 1843 at Presbyterian Bathurst. He was a farmer at Raglan about 1840 & a Licensed Innkeeper of the Commercial Hotel Raglan from 1875-1881. He died 0n 19 11 1885 age76 at Raglan & was buried at Kelso. Joseph (33) TL, was granted permission to marry Martha Davidson (29), native of the colony. On 9 December 1843, at Bathurst, New South Wales. Martha was originally Martha Blackman the daughter of James and Elizabeth Blackman, sponsored immigrants on "Canada" 1801. She had previously married Robert Davidson (Convict, Marquis of Hastings, 1827) in 1832. Robert died in 1843 leaving her with 5 young children. She and Joseph then had 5 more.

Joseph was tried at Essex in December 1832. The Essex Gaol Delivery, Chelmsford, before Baron John Gurney. He was indicted for assaulting T Farrow at Billericay and taking from his person a purse, containg a severeign and a half and some silver. Found GUILTY. Death sentence recorded. This conviction was altered to Highway Robbery and the sentence reprieved to transportation. then Joseph was sent to the Leviathan Hulk off Portmouth, to await transportation for life. From there, he was transported for life. Joseph was described as being 5' 5½" tall, sallow complexion, sandy brown hair, chestnut eyes. A scar on back of left hand and scar on ball of left thumb.
