The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

Crown Court PRISONERS AT NETTLETON. JOHN AIR, alias WINTER, (aged 34,) late of Nettleton, laborer, was tried for stealing four ewes and four lambs, the property of Roger Anderson, of that place, farmer. The evidence was given in the following order: person named Wingate stated that he saw the prisoner the ?.May, between and 12 o'clock at night, the turnpike road called Wellington-lane . driving the sheep and lambs. Witness observed that it was late hour be engaged in such a way, to which prisoner answered that he was going to Horsington.— Witness then asked where he ,intended to lodge, to he which answered anywhere. Suspicion of course arose in the mind of witness, and some other questions ensued, which prisoner answered in a very evasive and unsatisfactory manner. At length Air said that he had found the sheep in the High-street at Nettleton. Witness in consequence sent for a constable, and the sheep were put into the fold.— Roger Anderson, the prosecutor, said, after missing the sheep and lambs, in consequence information received went Wingate to the fold, where he found the prisoner in custody of the constable, and the sheep and lambs … Stamford Mercury, 29 July 1814.
