Samuel was born in 1791in Witney, Oxfordshire. The son of William and Joan Akers At the age of 11 in 1802 Samuel was an apprentice probably to his grandfather, also a Samuel Akers, Gardener of Charlbury, These few articles I found in the Jackson's Oxford Journal [JOJ] and the Oxfordshire Quarter sessions [OQS] JOJ On Saturday 2nd November 1811 Samuel Akers clicker [ a Clicker is a shoe maker who cuts out the leather for making the uppers] to Mr Bolton, cordwainer [shoemaker] in the city was committed to our city gaol, by Edward Hitchings Esq., mayor, having stolen several pairs of shoes the property of his master. OQS 21 June 1815. Sam Akers of Charlbury. Labourer. Fined £50 for deer slaying in Wychwood Forest. Wit.-Richard Pratley of potters hill lodge. OQS 22 June 1815 Sam Akers of Charlbury labourer fined £10 for a deer Wit, - Richard Pratley ast keeper JOJ Mar 7th 1816. Samuel Akers and Thomas Bicester, charged with feloniously assaulting and wounding Richard Pratley one of the assistant keepers of Wychwood Forest, in the discharge of his duty, and rescuing a gun which had been unlawfully seized. On the 21st June 1815 was in Court for stealing a deer in Wychwood Forest. He appeared in court again on 27th August 1816 charged again with stealing a deer from Wychwood Forest. Again Samuel appeared at the Oxford assizes OQS 27 August 1816 Sam Akers of Charlbury lab £20 for killing deer Wit. - Jos Millein forest keeper. JOJ 5th March 1817 age 26 after being committed 23 November 1816, Charged with having unlawfully and feloniously in his possession, at the hamlet of Walcot, in the parish of Charlbury, one fallow deer, the property of His Majesty the King, and was sentenced to 7years transportation. Samuel at aged 26 received 7 years transportation. He was received from Oxford on 27 May 1817 to the Prison Hulk "Bellerophon" and then transferred to HMS Tottenham 8th December 1817 which departed from Spithead on 27th March 1818 bound for Sydney, Australia arriving in Sydney 14th October 1818. Samuel was one of 200 convicts on the Tottenham. In 1821 Samuel was listed as a Wood Cutter. In 1822. Signatory to petition from prisoners employed by Government out of Barracks in want of clothing. Samuel received his Certificate of freedom on 5th August 1824.
