John was desperate to join his two elder brothers in TAS (Joseph Alexander b1806 ans Matthias Alexander b1810), but was unable to pay his fare of passage. As a consequence, on 16 Jul 1832, John together with James Shuttle also of Ramsbury, was charged at the Berkshire Assizes , held at Abington, with stealing 10 pigs valued at £10 from William Atherton of Ramsbury on 1 Jun 1832. These two were transported on the "Georgiana II" to Van Dieman's Land (TAS). The Georgiana II left Portsmouth on 16/10/1832 and arrived in TAS on 1/2/1833. See also the notes included for Joseph Alexander 1806. John Was stationed in the Longford district near to his two brothers. According to his convict behaviour report his character was very bad. On 14th April 1834 John was sentenced to hard labour for one year, later he was convicted for riotous behaviour and for fighting and his initiasl 7 year sentence was extended. He received a certificate of freedom in 13th November 1846 (10 years after his two older brothers were pardoned). He initially went to the Californian gold fields with Mary Ann Thewlis (later to become his 3rd wife), departing without his children, aboard the "Spartan" on 12/5/1850. As there is no record of the children on board it must be assumed that John left his three surviving children with Matthias & Mary Alexander. There is no record of his voyage home, but returned to Australia when gold was discovered at Ballaratt. He was successful at the diggings and this is how he acquired the money he would later use to invest in land. He settled in Table Cape after the gold boom and became by far the biggest landowner on the Cape. His selection of 1500 acres was divided into 2 blocks, both heavily timbered. Martin Reading Alexander 1849, his youngest nephew, took up the property and added to it. By the mid 1870's he owned almost all the Table Cape plateau and on the southern slopes down to Freestone Cove.
