1831, 27 June: Robert Alexander and John McCourt were tried at the High Court in Edinburgh and convicted for "the crime of theft, habit and repute at George Square, Edinburgh". They appear in the Court records as: Robert Alexander, 15, a trunk maker from Miller's Close, Canongate, Edinburgh; born in Edinburgh. John McCourt, 13, from North Gray's Close, High Street, Edinburgh; born in Edinburgh. Their victims were James Cadett of George Square and Murdoch Cunningham of North St David Street, Edinburgh, from whom they stole shirts and handkerchiefs. Both boys were sentenced to transportation for 14 years and both had previous convictions for theft (see National Records of Scotland, Reference AD14/31/456). --- IN VDL: 1843, 11 August: Robert Alexander was granted a Conditional Pardon. 1850, 27 February: He received his Free Certificate (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-2$init=CON31-1-2p70).
