Alfred Poole was transported on the Marion, departing 27th Sep 1847 and arriving 9th Jan 1848 with 301 passengers.
Built 1834 at Calcutta. Wood ship of 684 Tons. The 1847/48 voyage sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) BUT also went on to Port Phillip Bay, Victoria where 300 exiles disembarked. (The newspaper source says they were from Millbank, Pentonville & Parkhurst prisons.)

10/4/1846 Lincolnshire Chronicle Lincolnshire, England: NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. Easter Quarter Sessions. —The sessions of the peace, for the Easter quarter, commenced at the County Hall, Nottingham. Transported for seven years.— Alfred Poole, aged 17, was found guilty of stealing a pair of boots from a stall in the Market-place, the properly of Thomas Robinson, and sentenced to be transported for seven years. Alfred Poole was 20 years old on arrival, he was disembarked in Geelong, Victoria. No record of him on Tas. records. Listed on NSW Gov. Convict Records as an 'Exile', which meant that he had already spent time in prison and was given the option of transportation and a ticket of leave virtually on arrival and a conditional pardon soon after. 26/1/1850: 2 unclaimed letters at the Geelong Post Office. Also a mention of a Alfred Poole in the Ballarat district in the 1850's.
