Convict Notes
On Monday morning the following convicts left York Castle, in order to be delivered on board the Laurel Hulk, lying on the river at Portsmouth, Matthew Agar, John Allen, Joseph Rutherford, Robert Milner, and David Lindley, to be severally transported during their natural lives - Also Thomas Wilson, Richard Woodhead, Joseph Cowgill, Joseph Lapage, William Whorley, and Elias Serjeantson, to be severally transported for seven years. John was given a term of life for horse theft in York. He was held aboard the Prison Hulk, the Laural in Portsmouth Harbour from the 13th June, 1810 until he was transported aboard the Admiral Gambier on 12 May, 1811. in 1815 he was given an unconditional pardon and purchased land in the Hawkesbury area around Windsor, NSW. He became a land owner and horse trader and at one time owned the White Hart Inn on the Paramatta Road. He wrote to the Governor, Sir Thomas Brisbane, in 1824 asking to be allowed to bring his wife and three daughters out to New South Wales. This did not happen at this time, however the daughters and families later emmigrated to the colony.
He was tried at Hertford, Hertfordshire on 3 March 1786 for stealing bedding with a value of 200 shillings ($2661). He was sentenced to transportation for 7 years and left England on the Alexander aged about 45 at that time (May 1787). His occupation was listed as labourer or miller. He died in 1794. John Allen was convicted of Theft of a trunk, bed curtains, valances and other items at Herford Court, England.
