He was tried for forgery of notes in Liverpool, perhaps with his wife, at Lancaster Assizes, sentenced to 14years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 8 3 1817 after a voyage of 5months on FAME; he was 5'6.5" ruddy complexion brown hair grey eyes. He received his Conditional Pardon on 31 1 1820 & Absolute Pardon on 28 11 1821. He is recorded in 1822 as a painter with his family in Sydney. He became a portrait & miniature painter, decorator, drawing teacher at 47 Pitt St Sydney. He painted Lords Cricket Ground in September 1832 for the Cricketers Arms. He died on 16 11 1838 age65. 23/3/1816 Lancaster Gazette: Josiah Allen, for having in his possession, at Liverpool, divers articles for the purpose of marking forged Bank of England notes. Mary Ann Allen, for uttering forged Bank of England notes, at Liverpool. Wife Mary Ann Nicholls/Allen was tried and convicted with him and she arrived per 'Lord Melville' 1817, with their children. Josiah Allen was 43 years old on arrival - his occupation was a Portrait Painter. Native place: Kent. 1822 Census: Josiah was 61. Allen, Josiah absolute pardon fame 14 years Painter Allen, Josiah age 8 came free Lord Melville, child to J. Allen - Allen, Martha 13 came free Lord Melville child to J. Allen - d 1887 Allen, Benjamin age 4 born in the colony, child of J. Allen Sydney Allen, Ann age 11 came free Lord Melville, child to J. Allen Sydney Allen, Harriett age 2 born in the colony child to Jos. Allen Sydney - d 1888 - In 1841 she married Charles Rodius (1802-1860) who was also a painter and convict. Josiah was 5'6½" tall, ruddy complexion, brown hair, grey eyes. 31/1/1820: CP 28/11/1821: Absolute Pardon 16/11/1838: Josiah Allen died, aged 77 (NSW BDM). Josiah was a portrait and miniatre painter, decorator and drawing teacher. He advertised in Sydney as a portrait painer and drawing teacher, he was living at 47 Pitt Street, Sydney. September 1832: Josiah painted the Lords' cricket ground in London for the Cricketers' Hotel
