Convict Notes

City Court. On Tuesday Mr. Justice Jebb entered the City Court, … Judith Allen and Mary O'Brien, were indicted for stealing two pieces of ribbon, and one piece of black crepe in the shop of Messrs. Francis Hynes and Son, of the Exchange. Mr. Timothy Hynes deposed, that on the 14th April, the two prisoners came into his shop, the pretence of some ribbons —after little time, a piece of the ribbons was missed, and found on the person of one of them. Suspecting that the second women, though keeping distance from her, was an accomplice, he pushed her away from the counter, on which the crape fell down to on the ground. The prisoner had nothing to offer against this plain statement, and lordship left the case to the Jury, who found them Guilty. The prisoners were old offenders; the prisoner Allen was transported before to Botany Bay, and the woman O'Brien, a thief—under those circumstance, his Lordship felt it his duty to transport them for seven years. My Lord, will your Lordship grant the favor of sending my children with me, they were born there, Justice JEBB ~I have no power to make any such order. The prisoner then retired quite unconcerned. Cork Constitution, 23 Aug 1827.
