Ann (or Mary Ann as recorded in English documents) and her husband Josiah were a partnership in their making of forged notes. With his art skills, Josiah made the notes. And Ann would have distributed them. The first report of them is that Ann was charged with "uttering" - which is passing the notes off to someone as being real. This is different to simple possession, which the newspaper reports of her trial all state. Possibly the charge was altered to the lesser one of possession. Lancaster Gazetter, 24 February 1816 The following prisoners have been committed to our Castle [ie Lancashire] since our last: … Josiah Allen, charged with having in his possession, at Liverpool, a plate of engraving, for the purpose of making forged notes; also with having waved bar lines on paper with the word “one” in the substance thereof; Mary Ann Allen charged with uttering two forged one pound Bank of England notes at Liverpool The Lanaster Assizes commenced on Saturday 30 March 1816 Manchester Mercury, Tuesday 2 April 1816: * Josiah Allen for having in his possession, at Liverpool, divers articles for the purpose of making forged Bank of England bank notes. Fourteen years’ transportation. * John Bell, Anthony Halliwell, Sarah Halliwell, James Quin, MARY ANN ALLEN and Stephen Williamson for having in their possession forged Bank of England notes without lawful excuse. Pleaded guilty. Fourteen years transportation

Her daughter Eliza Streeter who came out with her on the Lord Melville, married Captain John Nicholson of the Lord Melville just after arriving in Sydney on 1/3/1817 under Special Licence. Mary Ann was originally assigned as a servant but after her pardon was granted in 1821, she was assigned as a "House Keeper". I am still researching her actual death date and where she is buried. Any help would be appreciated.
