Tuesday afternoon the Assizes ended at Derby, two prisoners received sentence of death; viz. Joseph  Allen, convicted of robbing the house of Mr. Thomas Barker, of two silver candlesticks, and various other articles; also Joseph Wits, for stealing 20 pounds of tea privately, out of the shop of Mr. F. Potter.—Wits was also tried with Samuel Allen (son of the said Joseph Allen) for being concerned in Mr. Barker's robbery, and both acquitted.—S. Allen was afterwards tried on another indictment, and found guilty of stealing two cheeses and a linen bag, out of the workshop of William Frost, in Kedleiton park (which were found its his father's house) and ordered to he transported beyond the seas for the term of 7 years . Aris’s Birmingham Gazette, 2 Aug 1790. At Derby Assizes, two Prisoners received Sentence of Death, viz. Joseph Allen, for a Burglary in Derby ; and Joseph Wats, for Shop lifting—Wats was reprieved and Allen left for Execution. Northampton Mercury, 30 July 1790. His father Joseph Allen was executed.
