Lancaster Assizes. Mary Jones (45) Wm. Fisher (2?) Wm. Shaw (31) John Whitehead (42) Wm. Woolstencroft ?? John Rice (.51) and Samuel Allen (15) pleaded Guilty of having forged Bank notes in their possession, knowing them to be such, and were sentenced to fourteen years transportation. … Jas. Jelley, for uttering forged notes, at Manchester.—Acquitted. Lancaster Gazette, 29 Mar 1817. At Chester Assizes, last week, Joseph Allen, aged 35, a respectable farmer, from Crowton, in Cheshire, was found guilty of uttering forged Bank of England notes, and immediately received sentence of death, the learned Judge (Sir W. Garrow) exhorting him to prepare for that fate which inevitably awaited him.— He had paid £140 in bad notes to seven  different persons; and in his defence he said he had received the whole from one Jelley and others, at Manchester.— Jelley, our readers will recollect, was acquitted at our last Assizes, of uttering notes; and Samuel Allen (brother of the above, as we understand) pleaded, at the same Assizes, guilty of having forged notes in his possession  and was sentenced to fourteen years transportation. Lancaster Gazette, 26 April 1817. (His brother, Joseph Allen was executed at Cheshire)
