Convict Notes

18/4/1845 Stamford Mercury Lincolnshire, England: At the Northamptonshire sessions on Friday last, Levi Allestree was charged with stealing a pair of shoes, the property of William Wallace, of Oundle. - Thos. Woodcock, of Peterboro', shoemaker, stated that the prisoner came to him on the 20th of March, and asked for a pair of ankle boots, in exchange for a smaller pair which he had on. - They agreed, and he went away. Wm. Wilson, an ostler at the Swan inn in Oundle, swore to the shoes which the prisoner exchanged as belonging to his fellow servant, the prosecutor, (who was confined to his bed with small-pox, and unable to appear,) and as having been stolen from the Swan premises. - The jury found him guilty, and a previous conviction being proved against him, he was sentenced to 14 years' transportation. Levi was listed as being 20 years old on arrival, 5'7" tall, ruddy complelxion, dark brown hair, brown eyes, small scar on back of 2nd finger of right hand, scar on left wrist, 2 scars on left thumb, scar on forefinger scar on 4th finger left hand, can read and write. 2/6/1853 Colonial Times, Hobart: RAPE Levi Allister and Ann Whitbread were placed in the dock and capitally indicted, the former with feloniously assaulting Jane Hughes, a child under ten years of age, on the 7th of April last, in the district of Brighton, and the latter with aiding, abetting, and assisting. Both prisoners pleaded not guilty, and were defended by Mr. Brewer. This was another of those atrocious cases the particulars of which are too revolting to be placed in print. The trial lasted the greater portion of the day and the jury had not returned their verdict when our reporter left. 2/6/1853 The Courier, Hobart: The jury finally returned a verdict of Not Guilty in the case of Ann Whitbread, the female prisoner; but M'Alister was found Guilty, and sentenced to death without hope of reprieve. From his Conduct Record: 21/6/1853: Executed in Hobart Town. No further reports in the newspapers.

Levi was baptised in St Peter's church, Oundle, on 3/6/1827. Levi's parents were Levi (a carpenter) and Sarah, from Oundle, Northamptonshire. Levi Snr died in 1843 so maybe his son went astray after his father's death, or he was trying to support his mother and 4 siblings.
