John is my 3 x greatgrandfather from the wife he left behind in England. His daughter who was born after his departure Ruth is my 2 x great grandmother
n.b. Occupation should read "shingle splitter" - one who works with wood (automatic occupation list only has "single splitter" available) 1846: Personal details: aged 28yrs; 5'4 1/2"; Protestant; can read & write; a shingle splitter; fresh complexion; brown hair; dk grey eyes; scar over left eye. Married, wife Elizabeth, 2 children (ref. Indent record) Father - John Mother - Sarah Sister - Mary Anne Brothers - James, Thomas, William, Henry, Joseph, Edward, George, Amos & ....(?) Native place - Colford, Forest of Dean, Gloucester, England. First stationed on Norfolk Island (off the east coast of New South Wales but at that time administered by Van Diemen's Land). Transferred to VDL (Tasmania)per the ship 'Tory' 1 May 1847.
John was also sentenced for poaching and killing a deer .
John Allford was from Coleford, Gloucester, England. He was found guilty of stealing a piece of calico material in 1844 and given a 10 yr transportation sentence. He sailed on the 'David Malcolm' to van Diemen's Land, via Norfolk Island. He was married to Elizabeth Bennett (in 1841) at Newland, England. His conduct record in Tasmania was good and at one time worked at Mr. Hurst's coal mines. At Campbell Town in the midlands of Tasmania in their avenue of tribute bricks to convicts of that area, there is a named brick to John. John remarried at Don, Tasmania in 1860(marriages were permitted in the colony, as he could not return to England) to Magdalene Mary Muller (also k/a Miller), the daughter of a free German immigrant, and widow of John Lindsay. John and Magdalene had 11 children. (Records also reveal that John's first wife also remarried, in England, to Absolom White.) John received his Ticket of Leave 9 April 1850 and Conditional Pardon 6 April 1852. Full convict details available at Archives Tasmania. John died at Railton, Tasmania in 1903 aged 85 yrs. (John's wife Magdelene is the sister of my gg grandmother, Barbara Muller.)
