Convict Notes
At our Town Sessions, on Friday last, a gang of five pick pockets who had found their way Bishop's Castle fair to our last May fair, were convicted of stealing two £1 notes from the person of a ...man named Pritchard.—The poor man had just disposed of his pig; put the money in his pocket, sud was bargaining for the purchase of another, when he was eased of his pocket book and its treasure: and the prisoners who had kept near him ever since he had received the money, suddenly dispersed themselves, leaving one of the most respectably dressed of the gang to brave the discovery. The money was scarcely gone ere it was missed, and this fellow seized; he protested his innocence; and was quite angry that a person of his appearance should be thought capable of such a trick,~—Pritchard, however, was positive this prisoner was one of those who had dogged him round the fair; and a boy who was near was of the same opinion. The prisoner was taken before the Magistrate, and the other four were speedily seized and identified, and the notes were found in their possession, They were sentenced each to 14 year's transportation! At the same Sessions, Hannah testord, for stealing a ciug from Messrs. Stove and Allen, and Thomas Boden, for larceny, were transported 7 years; Shrewsbury Chronicle, 23 July 1824. National Archives.
