Richard Allum and his brother or cousin Thomas Allum were transported for 'Sheep stealing'. NSW BDM list Richard's father as James and on Thomas's death list his father as Richard and mother Sarah. Thomas was also on board. Richard was 21 years old, he could read, was protestant, single, 5'6¼" tall, dark sallow and freckled complexion, brown hair, dark grey eyes, eyebrows meeting, nose cocked, scar outside right ahdn, pheasant inside lower left arm, A.A back of same, ring on third finger of left hand, scar back of fore and middle fingers of same. WHEREAS, RICHARD ALLUM, late Clerk to the Undersigned, having absconded, stands charged with embezzling several sums of money, and forging the signature of the undersigned, to a cheque : This is to give notice that the above reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the said Richaid Allum. Description-The said Richard Allum stands about five feet six inches high, pale complexion, prominent nose, thin face, walka very upright, formerly clerk to Messrs. Roberts, Cave, and Co , Commission Agents, and Mr. Russell, late Commission Agent, Druitt-street, and for some years previously accustomed to the sea. N.B.-The attention of captains and the Water Police is called to this notice, as the said Richard Allum is suspected of attempting to leave the Colony. August 1. 1574 10/8/1842 New South Wales Examiner, Sydney: FORGERY AND EMBEZZLEMENT BY A CLERK.— Richard Allum, for whose apprehension placards offering a reward of £20, have been posted about the town, during the past week, and who was captured at Parramatta on Saturday, and forwarded to Sydney on a warrant from the Parramatta Bench on the same day, was brought up for examination at the Police-office on Monday, on a charge of embezzlement, preferred against him by his late master, Mr. William Samuel, of George-street, butcher. It appeared from the evidence of Mr. Samuel, that the prisoner had been employed by him as clerk and collector, and that he had received, from various parties, at different times, monies on account, amounting to £29 17s. 1d., for which no credit had been given them in the books. He deceived Mr. Samuel, by making out the bills in duplicates, one set of which he shewed to Mr. Samuel, and the other set, in which credit was given for the sums he had received, he presented to the parties. Since Mr. Samuel gave information relative to embezzling these monies, he has discovered a forgery had also been committed. The prisoner was remanded for further examination, that the evidence of Mr. Strickland, of Kent-street-north, who paid him £13, and of Mrs. Trood, of King-street-east, who paid him £9 on account, might be procured. In the meantime Mr. Samuel was directed to file an information against him for the forgery. 21/1/1843 Maitland Mercury, NSW: Richard Allum was indicted for having forged the endorsement of William Samuel, his employer, on the back of a cheque ; a second count charged the prisoner with having the same in his possession ; and a third with having uttered it with intent to defraud the prosecutor. Guilty, sentenced to be transported for life. 29/7/1844: In Parramatta Gaol, sentenced to the treadmill. 22/1/1848: TOL, allowed to remain in the district of Campbell Town. 20/11/1851: Married Emily Ralph (who looks to be the cousin of Sarah Ralph who married brother/or cousin Thomas) at St Michaels church, Dapto/Wollongong - no children listed. 1858: Selling a dairy at Balgownie, a suburb of Wollongong, NSW. Sands Directories, NSW: Lived at Botany Road, Botany. 1902: Richard died at Waterloo/Botany, NSW. Father listed as James. Emily died 1908, at Granville.
