Court and date of trial: Old Bailey February Sessions 1828. Crime: Stealing in a dwelling house - a £5 note and 14 sovereigns, the property of his employer Basil George Wood [Basil George Woodd], wine merchant. Initial sentence: Death commuted to transportation for life. Annotated (Outcome): Considered at Report in Council March 5 1828. 'Mr Peel has fully considered this case and does not think himself warranted in recommending any further mitigation' 20 April 1828. Petitioner(s): Prisoner and 61 tradesmen and merchants of London. Tried at the Old Bailey, 21 February 1828. 539. FRANCIS ARTHUR ANDERSON was indicted for stealing, on the 7th of February , at St. George, Hanover - square, 14 sovereigns, and one 5l. Bank note, the property of Basil George Wood , in his dwelling-house, against the statute . SECOND COUNT, stating it to be the property of George Coates . The prisoner pleaded GUILTY - DEATH . Aged 35. Strongly recommended to mercy by the Prosecutor, believing it to be his first offence, his bearing a good character, and having been seduced by others to commit the offence.
