Family connections for Robert (Anderson) are: An amendment has been made Jul 2025. ANDERSON Robert (Anderson) was born about 1771 in Donegal Co. Ireland & became a soldier. He was tried for highway robbery at Donegal in 1791, sentenced to death reprieved to Life & arrived in NSW as a convict on 7 8 1793 after a voyage of 6months on BODDINGTONS; he was Protestant. He enlisted in NSW Corps as a private in 1793. In 1800 he was in Sydney & promoted to Ensign on 15 8 1800-Ref:'Colonial Regiment...'. He was assigned Mary (Franklin) as housekeeper before 1804 with whom he had a relationship & later married. In 1801 he arrived on Norfolk Island with Mary (Franklin) & commenced serving on Norfolk Island until 1804 when he was detached to (Townson)s company at Sydney. His resignation from NSW Corps in 1805 was not accepted & he went on leave from 25 5 1805 (he is recorded as having 149sheep at this time), although he was recorded as detached to (Savory)s company at Port Dalrymple Tasmania. He was discharged in March 1808 & became a settler; he leased 23rods at Barrack St (George Town?) in 1809. He (private from convict) was with 102nd Regiment in 1810 & married Mary (Franklin) on 19 3 1810 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. He wss issued his Absolute Pardon on 1 10 1811. He is recorded in 1812 as with NSW Corps. On 24 2 1817, in a fight with the victims husband, he accidentaly stabbed a pregnant woman (who died) with a bayonet & was sentenced to 3months in prison & fined 10lb. In 1828 he is recorded as a farmer (came Free?) with his family at Grove Farm Sydney. He died on 31 12 1839 age about67 at Liverpool & was buried at Liverpool Pioneer Memorial Park. [Some details taken from this Website] [Noted 2Robert (Anderson)s are recorded in Ref:'Colonial Regiment...'. The other was also an exconvict, who enlisted as a private on 4 9 1797 in Sydney. He enlisted in NSW Corps on 4 9 1797 in Sydney as private & was detached to (Johnston)s company in 1798-where he stayed until 1807. It was maybe he who was recorded with 149sheep in February 1805. He was detached to (Piper)s company in 1808 until being detached to 3company in 1809. He had been issued his Ticket of Leave when he was transferred to 73rd Regiment on 25 3/24 4 1810 in Sydney. He was transferred to Invalid Company Royal Veterans Company & detached to (Brabyn)s company on 25 10 1813. He was discharged on 24 9 1823 probably at Parramatta. [It seems that Mary (Franklin)s husband may have rejoined NSW Corps & more work is needed to truly attribute military service to these 2persons] Mary (Franklin) was born about 1783/88. She was tried for stealing lace etc at Chester Quarter Sessions & arrived in NSW as a convict on 12 6 1801 after a voyage of 10momths on EARL CORNWALLIS; she was Protestant. She was assigned to Robert (Anderson) as housekeeper with whom she went to Norfolk Island, arriving in 1801. She was Free by Servitude by 1810. In 1828 she is recorded as Free by Servitude with her family at Grove Farm Sydney. She died on 9 7 1834 age51 & was buried at Liverpool Pioneer Memorial Park. She married John (Clegg his second marriage) on 25 7 1825 at St Lukes CofE Liverpool. She died on 28 7 1880 age about76. ..John (Clegg) was born about 1791 & became a cotton spinner. He was tried for larceny w/2others breaking into counting house in Liverpool Lancashire at Lancaster Assizes, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 24 4 1817 after a voyage of 4months on SHIPLEY; he was sent to Parramatta on 2 5 1817. He had his Ticket of Leave by 1817 & married firstly (1of3) Lucy (Morgan) on 2 11 1818 at St Johns CofE Parramatta & produced 7children. He was issued a spirits licence on 27 1 1823. He was Free by Servitude by 1824. In 1828 he is recorded as innkeeper Weavers Arms Inn at Liverpool Rd Cumberland; his father is also recorded here. He married secondly (2of3) Phoebe (Anderson) on 25 7 1825 at St Lukes CofE Liverpool. He had a third relationship with Mary (Alford). In 1828 he is recorded as innkeeper Weavers Arms Inn with his family at Liverpool Rd Botany Cumberland with 200acres; his father is also recorded here. Mar 1817 Robert Anderson and Hugh Collins accidentally stabbed convict Lydia Ragan with a bayonet while they were in a drunken scuffle with her husband, Timothy. Lydia, who was pregnant at the time, died in agony five days later. - The trials of the week concluding with this day, we are from the same cause unable to report. The most important and interesting was that of Robert Anderson and Hugh Collins, for the murder and killing Lydia Ragan at her house in York-street, on the night of Monday the 24th of February last.—Verdict Guilty of killing by misadventure ; both to be imprisoned 3 months, and Anderson to pay a fine of £10 to the king.

n the colony, Robert married Mary Franklin (Convict, Earl Cornwallis, 1800), March 19th 1810 at St Philips, Sydney. Mary and Robert had 8 children between 1807 and 1819.




Robert served in the 73rd company and the Royal veterans after he obtained a TL.... Rank attained : Private Date of Enlistment : 04 Sep 1797 Where Enlisted : Sydney Transfered : 73rd Regiment of Foot in 25 March 1810 Sydney Transfered : Invalid Company, later Royal Veteran Company 'Captain Brabyn's or Invalid Company' on 25 Oct 1813 Date of Discharge : 24 Sep 1823 Where Discharged : Probably Parramatta, which was the Company Headquarters.




Robert was tried in 1791 at Donegal and sentenced to life for the crime of highway robbery. This capital punishment was commuted to a term of transportation for Life. He was described as a soldier born 1772. He was transported aboard the ship 'Boddingtons' which arrived in the colony 7 Aug 1793.
