Ann was in London, where on Monday June 2nd 1806, she came to lodge with Mary Ann Hopkins and her husband John at number 37 Kent Street, Saint George, Southwark. She stayed until Friday morning when she left, taking with her a gown and two childrens frocks. Mary Ann Hopkins didn't hear from her again until she found her in the Tower of London on June 10, wearing the gown. She took her to the Police Office Union Hall, made a statement on oath before T. Evance and put her mark to it. On July 21, 1806 Ann was tried, convicted and sentenced to 7 years transportation to New South Wales at Surrey Sessions of Peace for "stealing apparel belonging to John Hopkins". She was 18 years old. Left England on 18th May 1808. Ship:- the 'Speke I' sailed with 99 female convicts on board of which 2 died during the voyage. Arrived on 16th November 1808. On February 26th,1811 a Ticket of Leave was Issued for Ann Lane Her relationship with convict John Innes ('Glatton' 1803) produced her son John Lane born on 30th September 1809 and baptised at St.Philips Church, Sydney. He lived with his mother for his first ten years, however on 1st January 1819 he was received into the newly opened Male Orphan School, Ann was listed as a washerwoman. The School was opened that day in George Street, Sydney by Governor Lachlan Macquarie for boys aged between 7 and 10 to receive a basic education of reading, writing, arithmetic, industrial training and Anglican Church Services on Sundays. This is where he remained until 20th January 1827. He was apprenticed as a tailor, he went on to marry Hannah Hawkins in 1836, daughter of David Hawkins and their son John was born at Kurrajong and baptised in Richmond on 6th May 1838. They had a total of 7 children. By 1811 Ann was in a long term relationship with convict John Sherwood ('Glatton' 1803), resulting in the birth of 7 children, on 12th December, 1836. Anne and John were finally legally married. Ann's husband, John Sherwood died May 30th 1850 in Kurrajong NSW at the age of 74 and was buried at St Peters Anglican Church Richmond. Anne Lane died November 13th 1858 at Kurrajong Heights at the age of 70 and was also buried at st Peters . Her grave can still be located there. Ann was a well known person in the Kurrajong area, known as "Granny Sherwood", often seen walking several miles to and fro between Kurrajong and Richmond.

In the colony, it would appear that Ann had a defacto relationship with John Ennis (Convict, 1803, "Glatton". They had a child, John Lane, born 1809. In 1812, Ann married John Sherwood (Convict, 1803, "Glatton"). In the 1814 muster, both of the couple are mentioned: [Ref 5853 page 132] John Shearwood, Glatton, On Stores, Driver. [Ref 6468 page 145] Ann Lane, Speke, Off Stores, 3 children Off Stores, Wife to John Sherwood.
