JAMES WILLIAM ANSTICE was born on 28 February 1814 at Endell St. Hospital, London England His parents were Robert William Anstice and Alice Jesson. He was a gentleman's servant and in 1835 he was convicted in the Central Criminal court in London of Larceny ( theft of personal property) and was given a 14 years Sentence. He left England on the 7th of September 1835 as a convict on the ship "Bardaster". He arrived in Van Diemen's Land, (Tasmania) Australia, on 13 January 1836. After serving 7 years in Tasmania he was granted his "ticket of Leave" and after serving 9 years he was given a Conditional pardon on the 1st of May 1844. In 1844 he had a son Robert born in Launceston Tas. He left Tasmania in 1845 and set sail to Melbourn, in steerage, under the name "Ansley". He had a son, John William Anstice on 25/7/1848 with his first wife, Ann who died in Melbourne on 17/03/1852, aged 35 years. He then married Catherine McNamara in 1854. He died on 8 August 1861 in Melbourne, Victoria, at the age of 47.
