Convict Notes
Extensive Robbery.—The premises of Messrs. Daniel and Nathaniel Lloyd, clothiers, at Uley in Gloucestershire, were recently plundered of 7 bags of Spanish wool, the value between £700 and £800. So daring a depredation naturally excited surprise in the neighbourhood ; but the robbers had contrived to effect their purpose with considerable art, it became necessary call the aid and experience of the London police. Adkins was sent for, and by his intelligent enquiries, information was received as led to the apprehension of a gang of dissolute fellows, by the names of Joseph Herring, William Flint, Samuel Anthill, and Geo. Smith, who were all ascertained have been concerned in the robbery, and to have sold the fruits of their villainy to persons in the neighbourhood. These men, being examined before H Burgh, Esq. a magistrate for the county, were committed to take their trials, together with George Pinegar, John Gardener, T. Smith, and. John Alder, charged with receiving the wool, knowing it to have been stolen. Cambridge Chronicle. 21 May 1819.
The following convicts were removed from our county Gaol on Tuesday last, and put board the Retribution hulk, at Sheerness, preparatory to their transportation to Botany Bay: Wm. Niblett, for life; Edward Sheppard, Thomas Smith, and John Gardner, for fourteen years; and Samuel Antill, Wm. Flint, Joseph Herring, William Hill, Nathaniel Lusty and Henry Williams for seven years.
