John APPLETON, together with his brother William, was convicted at Southampton, England on 25 Feb 1837 for stealing - from the person. Previous convictions including Highway Robbery and vagrancy. Bad connections. Life sentence. William & John were both sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Susan' arriving 21 Nov 1837. Single man; aged 30 yrs; farmer and ploughman; sallow complexion; light brown hair; grey eyes. Native place of birth: Bishops Stoke Brother: William APPLETON VDL: Work assignments in the Colony. Several notes of misconduct and punishments, including imprisonment and working in chains. 20 Jan 1846: Ticket of Leave granted. 30 Nov 1847: Application for Permission to Marry - John APPLETON (per Susan) to Margaret WILSON (per Lloyds). 3 Jan 1848: Marriage - John APPLETON, adult, bachelor, shepherd to Margaret WILSON, aged 19 yrs; spinster; certified no parent or guardian in VDL.
