William APPLETON, together with his brother John, was convicted at Southampton, England on 25 Feb 1837 for stealing - from the person. Previous convictions including Highway Robbery and vagrancy. Bad connections. Life sentence. William & John were both sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Susan' arriving 21 Nov 1837. Single man; aged 28 yrs; farm labourer, can plough; sallow complexion; light brown hair; grey eyes. Native place of birth: Bishops Stoke VDL: Assigned to work service. Some notes of minor misconduct, mostly drunk and insolent. 23 Dec 1845: Ticket of Leave granted. 30 Oct 1852: Departure from VDL. William APPLETON, ship to Colony - 'Susan'; Free by servitude; to Melbourne, Victoria per ship 'Yarra Yarra'. (ref. POL220/1/2) (There were other William Appleton's in the Colonly at the time and several records for departures and returns, so William may have done so.) Note: Brother John APPLETON married in VDL 1847.
