2 January, 1854: He was on the workforce of JT Lakeland at Sorell, for payment of £20 (https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON30-1-1P374JPG). --0-- INQUEST: 1 October, 1855: An inquest found he died of natural causes while on a work gang at Antill Ponds, north of Oatlands on 30 September, 1855, "being a Crown prisoner laboring at the public works there, suddenly died, and that he so died by the Visitation of God in a natural way and not otherwise." IN VDL: 9 December, 1852: On arrival in VDL, he was listed as convict #26410, aged 45, single, a stonemason, able to read and write, Church of England; native place Huddersfield (https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON33-1-110$init=CON33-1-110p12). ON THE VOYAGE: The surgeon's journal from the voyage makes no mention of any treatment given to John Armitage for secondary syphilis the symptoms of which are rashes and can include fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, patchy hair loss, headaches, weight loss, muscle aches and fatigue (STD Facts - Syphilis at https://www.cdc.gov). --0--

PRISONS: 30 March, 1852: John Armitage, inmate #193, was admitted to Portsmouth prison. Prior to this, he had been held (in order of most recent to earliest imprisonment) on the Stirling Castle hulk, on the Defence hulk, in Millbank prison at Westminster, in West Riding House of Correction at Wakefield and York Castle. He was listed as 40 years old when convicted, single, able to read and write, a stone mason and a Methodist; his family lived at Crossland Moor, Huddersfield. State of health: "Secondary syphilis" (UK, Prison Commission Records, 1770-1951 for John Armitage; Portsmouth Prison; Register of Prisoners; 1874-1879). 2 July, 1852: He was sent from Portsmouth jail to board the Lady Montagu for VDL. --0--

TRIAL: 11 July, 1849: He was sentenced to 7 years' transportation for receiving stolen goods (groceries), the property of Ann Woodman at York. He had a previous conviction for warehouse breaking (1 year's jail) (https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON33-1-110$init=CON33-1-110p12). --0--
