Jane ARMSTRONG was convicted at Kildare, Ireland on 31 Oct 1849 for arson - house burning (probably politically motivated), no previous convictions. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Duke of Cornwall' arriving 27 Oct 1850. Single woman, aged 20 yrs; kitchen maid; 4'9 1/2" height; Protestant; fresh complexion; sandy brown hair; blue eyes; can read & write. Native place of birth: Co. Wicklow, Ireland. Brother: John Sister: Sarah, at Dublin. (ref. Convict Indent record) VDL: Assigned to work services in the Colony. 9 March 1852: Refusing to work. 3 mths hard labour. 24 May 1853: Ticket of Leave granted. 21 Feb 1854: Application for permission to marry - to Richard JAMES. Approved. (ref. 52/1/7) 17 April 1854: Marriage to Richard James at St. George's Church, Hobart. Jane aged 21 yrs; Richard aged 41 yrs, a mariner. (ref. noted on Convict Conduct record & registration 37/1/13 no. 338 ) 18 Dec 1855: Conditional Pardon approved. 31 Oct 1856: Free Certificate issued.
