Richard Armstrong was 24 years old on arrival in VDL. He had been a soldier, and was transported for striking Sergeant William Webb. Richard was 5'9" tall, could read and write, single, Joiner/Carpenter, fresh complexion, sandy hair, hazel eyes. Richard had been with the 34th Regiment for 12 months, and other regiments before he had purchases his discharge and he then entered rifles. Richard's conduct record was not good, he received many TOL's which were mostly reinstated because of misconduct of some kind. 4/11/1851: TOL. 11/1/1853: Not recommended for CP 1855: Married Julia Burke, they had 6 children. Julia was listed as free. 17/10/1872: Both Julia and Richard were tried for the manslaughter of Michael Ford, who was a lodger with them. They were both found guilty, Richard 15 years imprisonment and Julia 5 years. 8/11/1872: Richard was sent to Port Arthur. 8/12/1879: Discharge approved. 1895: Richard died at Deloraine, in his 80th year. 2/4/1895:Wellington Times, Tas. - An old identity at the sawmill passed over to the great majority yesterday morning about 6 o'clock in the person of Richard Armstrong. The deceased had been employed at the Moore & Quiggin's mill for a great number of years. He leaves a large grown up family, mostly all married, to mourn their loss.




Richard married Julia Burke and had several children including George. George married Lily Elizabeth Okeefe ( Mother Elizabeth Evans) George and Lily produced many children including Cecilia Mary mother of Susan and Jeffrey Bollard
