In December 1832 Arthur Sheriff was found guilty at Edinburgh High Court of Justiciary of stealing a coat from the shop of John Watson, spirit dealer, Grassmarket. Being a 'habit & repute' thief was sentenced to 14 years transportation - see Scotsman newspaper 5 December 1832 p 4 on 'High Court of Justiciary'.
