29/4/1843 Staffordshire Advertiser Staffordshire, England: Committed to Stafford County Gaol. For the Assizes. Charles Ash, charged with stealing five files, and a quantity of keys, the property of John Pitt, at Willenhall. Charles Ash was listed as 23 years old on arrival. (Death records state he was born in 1806 and was 76 years old when he died in 1882). His native place was Willenhall, he had never been in prison before. Occupation: Basket maker/key filer. Charles was 5'5½" tall, fresh complexion, light brown hair, light blue eyes, single, protestant, reads a little, mole on right arm. Father: John Mother: Anne Brothers: David, Joseph, Samuel, Leonard. Sisters: Ellen, Fanny??(he was unsure of her name). 1/12/1846: TOL 1848 Census: Lived in Bathurst Street, Hobart, was single and holding a TOL No marriage or children listed. 6/7/1850 (Cornwall Chronicle, Launceston): Expiration of sentence. 1/2/1882: Charles Ash died at Her Majesty's Gaol, Hobart, of 'Disease of the Heart'. Listed as a Blacksmith, aged 76 (Born 1807). 6/2/1882 The Mercury, Hobart: INQUEST.-An inquest was held at the Bird-in Hand Hotel on Saturday, before Mr. Coroner Tarleton and a jury of seven, of whom Mr. P. J. Sinclair was foreman, touching the death of Charles Ash, who died on the 1st inst, while a prisoner under sentence in Hobart gaol. The deceased was 76 years of age, and having been found in the streets wandering abroad, without any home or visible means of subsistence, and in very feeble condition, he was sent to prison by the Police Magistrate on the 24th ult., in order that he might receive proper care and attention. These were given him, but he died from heart disease on Wednesday last. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the testimony of Dr. Turnley, the medical officer of the gaol, of "Death from natural causes."
