Manchester Mercury Lancashire, England 12 Aug 1817 Assize Intelligence William Ashby, aged 21, for house-breaking at Burslem. William was listed as 21 on arrival, native place: Eversham. William was 5'5ΒΌ" tall, fair pale complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, cast in left. 14/6/1832: Assigned to William Foster, Williams River. 1837: Assigned to W. T. Forster, Dungog 19/3/1839: TOL Williams River 1845: Recommended for a CP 16/1/1847: CP No positive identification.. 1871: NSW BDM: There is a death listed for a William Ashby in 1871 - aged 74. also the following: 25/7/1871 Clarence and Richmond Examiner and New England Advertiser , Grafton, NSW: REFUSING TO READ THE BURIAL SERVICE.___ The following communication from a member of the Church of England at Bandon Grove appears in Thursday's Maitland Mercury ;-" On Wednesday night, the fifth instant, an old resident on the charity of several Bondon Grove inhabitants died, he having lived on one farm here for forty years. He was seventy-four years of age; his name was William Ashby. As he acknowledged himself a member of the Church of England, the minister for this district was written to by a gentleman requesting him to read the burial service at Ashby's funeral. His reply was to the effect the Bishop would not allow him to do so, as our burial-place was not consecrated ground. Other members of the Church of England He buried there, provious ministers not having received such a prohibition. In consequence the poor man was buried without a clergyman being present, the service being read by our schoolmaster. 1 would further add that we have been refused a Church of England service in our chapel for a like reason (it being a union chapel), and consequently open to all Protestant clergymen who choose to officiate.
