Convict Notes

Hereford Assizes 5th August 1822: The business of the day saw Samuel Ashcroft, convicted of stealing a box of clothes from a hotel, sentenced to death. The Judge giving him no hope of mercy; Poor old S. Ashcroft must have been worried by the Judge's remarks about no hope of mercy but it seems that Sir W. Garrow either reconsidered his verdict or was having a laugh at Samuel's expense, as all the condemned were reprieved before the Judges left the City.
