He is probably the child baptised 'William Archibald', parents John and Ann Ashton, 24 October 1802 at St Peter's, Nottingham, England (he is 'William Archibald', father's name John, in his death certificate) Conviction: 8 January 1827  Nottingham Quarter Sessions: William Ashton, sentenced to 7 years transportation for assault on game keeper on 18 October 1826  at parish of Ratcliffe upon Soar. Received 3 February 1827 on the 'Ganymead' prison hulk moored at Chatham.  Departure 25 June 1828 on the 'Eliza',  Arrival 18 November 1828 Sydney NSW. Convict Indent:  William Ashton, Aged: 24 years, Native place Nottingham; Religion: Protestant; Trade or calling Bargeman, Married, Offence: Beating game keeper, Tried: 8 Jan 1827, at Nottingham , No previous conviction, Sentence: 7 years, Assigned to J West, Castle Hill. Description:  5 ft 4in, ruddy freckled complexion, dark brown hair, grey eyes, scars on left eyebrow, tattoos: crucifix 1828 on right arm, mermaid WA SA JA etc on left arm. Marriage (not found) about 1833 • Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia to Charlotte Hancey/Hancy (1810–1867) Ticket of Leave 33/801: 1 October 1833 for Parramatta district  Certificate of Freedom 10 January 1834: gives occupation bargeman and butcher; Crime: Assault  game keeper. Year of birth 1804. Description 5 ft 4in, dark complexion, Hair brown mixed with grey, blue eyes, 2 scars left eyebrow, small pock mark over right eyebrow, several tattoos described in detail: "Mermaid heart pierced with two darts - Dove with branch in mouth WASAJA & anchor inside lower left arm - three angels Crucifix INRI Double heart pierced with two Darts 1823 inside lower left arm". Death 19 July 1881 • McGrath's Hill, Windsor, New South Wales: Death certificate : "William Archibald Ashton" b. Nottingham, father John. Age 78, labourer, time in colony 56 yrs, married age 27 Parramatta to Charlotte Hansey. Died of phlegmon of hand, septic pneumonia, duration 1 week. Informant Charles Edward Ashton, son, of Rouse Hill. Children of marriage: two males, four females living, two males, one female deceased.   Burial 20 July 1881 • Wesleyan Cemetery, McGrath's Hill, Windsor

ADM 101/23/5B . Medical and surgical journal of the convict ship Eliza for 10 June 1828 to 22 April 1830 1829 by James Patton, surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in transporting convicts from Woolwich and Sheerness to New South Wales. Folio 7: William Ashton, aged 24: disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 25 June 1828 at Sheerness. Gradually recovered in a few days. Folios 44A-45: William Ashton, aged 26, prisoner: disease or hurt, bowel complaint. Put on sick list, 4 November 1828 at sea. Discharged 16 November 1828 to hospital.
