William ASHTON was convicted at Surrey, England on 21 May 1838 for stealing - a looking glass from a dwelling house. Convicted twice before. 7 yr transportation sentence. Hulk Report: "indifferent". Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Marquis of Hastings' arriving Hobart 18 July 1839. Single man; aged abt 25 yrs' a shoemaker; 5'5" height. Native place of birth: London (ref. Convict record) VDL: Work service assignments. Some notes of misconduct. 22 March 1844: Ticket of Leave. 1845: Free Certificate issued. 1847: Married Honora DONOHOE (https://convictrecords.com.au/convicts/donoghoe/honora/134975). 1851: Left Van Diemen's Land for Melbourne, Victoria.
