Convict Notes
Richard Aston was convicted at the Gloucester Assizes 12 March 1800 and sentenced to 7 years transportation. [ship's muster roll] Unfortunately the page that has the Calendar of the Prisoners for the March 1800 Sessions is missing from the scans in "Gloucestershire, England, Prison Records" in Ancestry.com. A newspaper report has the following: "Thomas Cooper, and Richard Aston, for stealing bark, the property of John Pitman" [Gloucester Journal 17 March 1800 p3] He was transported on the Earl Cornwallis which departed Portsmouth 18 November 1800 and arrived Sydney 12th June 1801. In the 1806 General Muster of NSW he is Richard Austin, "indented Mr A Thompson" In the 1814 population muster, he is a labourer of Windsor In the 1816 settler and convict list, he is Richard Austin, sentence expired March 1807, landholder at Richmond Richard Aston died 7th July 1816. The St Peters Church of England, Richmond burial register has "Richard Aston aged 60 years came prisoner to this colony in the ship Earl Cornwallis in the year 1801 Died July 7th was buried July 11th 1816 by me Henry Fulton" [ SAG reel 148] It is possible he is related to Richard Aston, wood-cutter b 1745 d.1829 Newland, Gloucestershire
Richard Aston and Thomas Cooper were sentenced to seven years transportation for stealing bark the property of John Pitman - reference: Gloucester Journal 17 March 1800
Richard's son Richard Aston(the younger) was also charged and tried for the same offence of stealing oak bark from the Kings Forest of Dean but was discharged.
