John ATKINS (alias William GRAINGER) was convicted at the CCC, London on 27 Nov 1848 (under name Grainger) for uttering counterfeit coins. Previous similar offence. 10yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Lady Montagu' arriving 9 Dec 1852. Aged 50yrs; Gem Smith; 5'5 1/2"; Church of England; can read & write; dark complexion; grey/black hair; blue eyes. Native place of birth: Warwick, England. Widower, (wife died 2mths after his conviction) 2 children. Mother: Mary Brothers: Thomas, Robert & George Sisters: Sarah & Ann VDL: Pass Holder status, 2 yrs, less 8 mths, upon arrival. 1852: Assigned to John Lord, York Plains. 1853: Assigned at Ross. 1853: Assigned at Morven (Evandale) 10 Oct 1853: Ticket of Leave granted. 17 July 1855: Conditional Pardon approved. 17 Oct 1861: Indecent conduct. Fined or 3mths hard labour. 28 Sept 1866: Uttering forged coins. 2 Nov 1866: Launceston Court - Stealing lead. 6mths hard labour. 2yrs imprisonment.
