ATKINS, Louisa (c1800-?) Tried - 19 July 1813 Surrey July Quarter Sessions Louisa was a 13-year-old servant when she was presented before the Surrey Court in 1813 on a charge of larceny and received a 7 year sentence to New South Wales. She sailed on the Broxbornebury in 1814 as a convict. BC: 1800 approx. Sentenced: 19/07/1813 Surrey July Quarter Sessions to transportation for 7 years Crime: Larceny Previous Occupation: Servant Age on Convict Indent: 14 1814 Muster: No record found 1817, 23 July – Louisa Atkins, tried Surrey 1813 for 7 years, arr per Broxbornebury, was on a list of prisoners to be sent to the Derwent, Tasmania, per ship Governor Macquarie (Source: SRNSW Col Sec Papers, Letters Sent Reel 6005; 4/3496 p257) 1819, 9 Jan. – Joseph Maples was on a list money owed by the Government at Hobart for “extra bricklayers work” totalling ?18, 15 shillings. (Source: Hobart Town Gazette 09/01/1819, p1) 1819 - Louisa Atkins, aged 19, married Joseph Maples (bc1796-1858, arrived 1812 Indefatigable (1) from England as a convict), aged 23, in Hobart on 27 Dec. 1819. JOSEPH MAPLES. Hobart town. July 10, 1832.” (Source: Hobart-town Courier 13/07/1832, p1 also 20 & 27 July) 1835 – “Louisa Maples, an elegant “Nymph of the Pave," was fined 5s. for drunkenness”. (Source: Colonial Times (Tasmania) 07/04/1835, p7) 1837 – “Louisa Maples was remanded on a charge of robbing John Dow.” (Source: Colonial Times (Tasmania) 19/09/1837, p7) 1840 – “Louisa Maples and Mary Badenoch, two regular out-and-outers, were charged with being common prostitutes, and with wandering about the public streets, at 2 o'clock in the morning, behaving in a very unbecoming manner. They were each committed to the Female House of Correction, and there to be kept to hard labor (sic) for one month.” (Source: Colonial Times (Tasmania) 25/02/1840, p7) 1858 - Joseph Maples, aged 63, died in Brighton (Tasmania), funeral held on 6 Sep 1858. Per "Broxbornebury", 1814 1817 Jul 23: On list of prisoners to be sent to the Derwent per "Governor Macquarie" (Reel 6005; 4/3496 p.257) 1822 Sep 18: On list of convicts in Van Diemen's Land, as called for by Lieutenant Governor Sorell (Reel 6009; 4/3506 p.298) Louisa arrived in VDL on 9/8/1817. 27/12/1819: Married Joseph Maples (Indefatigable 1812) Hobart – they had 4-5 children. 20/7/1832 Hobart Town Courier: CAUTION. All persons are hereby cautioned not to give trust or credit to my wife Louisa Maples, who has absconded from her home and four children without any just cause or provocation, as after this date I will not be responsible for any debts she may contract.
