Mary Ann found in the 1841 census in prison in Staffordshire (attached) Mother Mary and brother Thomas and sister Jane found in the 1841 census in Longton, Staffordshire all born in this county. (attached) There is a child born in September 1841 called William in the right area, and William Cartledge is the father of her child she talks about on her VDL register. In the newspaper clipping for 1845 she is collecting maintenance from William and his wife when she gets into an altercation with them. In a newspaper clipping on January 1841 it talks about her 18 month old child who I haven't found, so she may have had 2 children then again she might have been just looking after the child or "borrowed" it for the day to cover her stealing. There was a James Atkins born in the right time frame to tie in with the newspaper article but somebody found him living with his mother Mary aged 20 in the 1841 census whereas "our" Mary was 16 years old and in prison. I think this is a job for the descendants!!! Found the birth of Mary ATKIN in India. Presidency of Bengal (not Madras) though brother Joseph and sister Ann were born in the Presidency of Madras. (all attached). [There is another Mary Atkins born in Trichinopoly, Presidency of Madras with the same parents but she died at 13 months old, it was not uncommon to name a new baby after a deceased child in those days, I couldn't find the birth of this Mary Atkins in Trichinopoly on FMP only the death but a descendant I've been in correspendence with found the birth record] Father Joseph ATKINS from Leek, Staffordshire, a private in the army in India in different regiments at each birth, mother Mary. Four newspaper clippings of Mary Ann/Mary which all tie in with the information given. None of them however concerning her transportation sentence. Criminal register and transportation register attached.
