Convict Notes

William was born in Southwark, Surrey on the 20th May 1785. Later, when working as a waterman on the Thames, he is reported to have fallen in with the wrong company and developing a drinking problem. This lead to episodes of crime (obtaining goods in a fraudulent manner for money). He left behind his wife Frances and four children, Richard (18yrs), William (15yrs), Eliza (10yrs) and John Henry (7yrs) when he was transported. This was not his first conviction, he had previously been held on the prison hulk Retribution after being sentenced in 1818 for the same type of crime. I have a copy of a petition letter dated the 7 Aug 1821 that lead to his eventual release at that time.

Records I've viewed on the Tasmanian Library website show that William died at Impression Bay, Tasmania on the 6th Jan 1852. His sentence was 7yrs but due to continued offending his sentence/punishments were repeatedly extended, he never returned to the UK or his family.
